HMRC Reminder: New Tax Return Deadline

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has issued a reminder about the new tax return deadline of 31st October for self-assessment paper returns.

In previous years, both paper and online self-assessment returns had to be filed by 31st January - but from this year the paper returns must be with HMRC by 31st October.

The deadline for filing online returns remains 31st January.

HMRC says that those who file a paper tax return need to start thinking about information such as their P60, records of savings and investments, and details of any untaxed income.

ONLINE FILING

Alternatively individuals could switch to online filing, in which case the deadline is 31st January.

Once registered, tax is calculated automatically, users receive an immediate acknowledgement, and the return is processed faster so any money owed by HMRC is repaid more quickly.

Once the return has been filed, any tax due has to be paid by 31st January whether it was filed on paper or online.
